What is periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease, also called gum disease, is an infection that attacks the gums and tissues that surround the teeth. This disease, which can cause tooth loss if left untreated, is caused by the buildup of plaque on your teeth and under the gums. Periodontal disease is usually painless, so you may not realize it if you have it. If your gums bleed easily or are red, swollen, and tender, Dr. Gregory G. Oman may recommend periodontics, commonly known as gum treatment.

What is a professional dental cleaning?

During a dental cleaning, our hygienist will remove the plaque from your all of your teeth, both above and below the gum line. Usually, our dentist recommends dental cleanings every six months, but if you have periodontal disease, our dentist may recommend more frequent dental cleanings.

What is scaling and root planing?

Scaling and root planing is a deep cleaning treatment. During scaling, the plaque and tartar are scraped away from above and below the gum line. Then our dentist will smooth the rough spots on your tooth roots, which is referred to as planing. This prevents the buildup of plaque, as plaque cannot easily adhere to smooth surfaces.
