What are dental crowns?
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped restoration that is placed over the tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. Dental crowns can be constructed out of different materials. Stainless steel crowns are usually used as temporary crowns while a permanent crown is being constructed. Metal crowns are made out of gold or other alloys. Less tooth enamel has to be removed to place a metal crown than with other crown types. Porcelain over metal crowns match your natural teeth in color and are also quite strong. Ceramic or porcelain crowns match the color of your natural teeth better than any other crown type. Our office has CEREC CAD/CAM technology and many posterior crowns can placed in just a single visit.
Do I need a dental crown?
If your tooth needs support or is unsightly, our dentist may recommend a dental crown in Bountiful, Utah. There are many other instances in which dental crowns may be used in your smile. Crowns are used to protect weak teeth from breaking and to hold cracked teeth together. Teeth that are already broken or worn can be restored with the use of a crown as well. If a tooth has a large filling, the tooth may need the support of a dental crown. Dental bridges use crowns on the abutment teeth as an anchor, and crowns can be used to cover dental implants. A tooth that is irregularly shaped or discolored can have its appearance improved by the placement of a crown.
