What are dental implants?
A dental implant replaces a missing tooth’s root and serves as an anchor for a replacement tooth, also called an implant restoration. Dental implants are made up of two parts: a titanium post, which serves as the root, and a restoration. The restoration can be a crown, bridge, or denture. The dental implant post is surgically placed in your jaw. As your jawbone heals, it forms around the post, anchoring it in place. When the healing process is over, which can take from six to twelve weeks, a small connector post called an abutment is attached to the post. Impressions are made of your teeth so that the restoration can be constructed. When ready, the restoration is attached to the abutment.
Do I need dental implants?
If you have gaps in your smile from missing teeth, want a comfortable alternative to dentures, or are uncomfortable with having a dental bridge placed, Dr. Gregory G. Oman may recommend dental implants in Bountiful, Utah. Dental implants become permanent because they fuse with your jawbone. Because of this, they feel and function like your natural teeth. Altering of nearby teeth is not necessary, so having a dental implant instead of another procedure can help to maintain your oral health. Dental implants are quite durable, and with proper oral care, can last a lifetime. Dental implants may be preferred over dentures as well because it is easier to eat and speak properly with implants.
